Self Haircut University (SHU) was publicly established on December 6, 2022. This date is special because it is also the birthday of SHU's Founder and CEO, Alex Kouras.

Alex is an American with Greek and Portuguese ancestry. The name 'Kouras' is significant to him as it is a shortened version of his surname, 'Kourahanis,' making it easier for people to pronounce and remember on social media. Interestingly, 'Kouras' resembles the Greek word 'Kouréas,' which means 'barber.' Alex's father revealed this connection to him a year after starting his YouTube channel. Alex is now the only YouTuber specializing entirely in self-haircuts and teaches millions around the world how to take control of their appearance through self-haircuts, health, and fitness.

Alex's journey in hair cutting began when he was just 13 years old. After numerous disappointing haircuts from local salons and an urge to relieve his family's financial problems, he decided to take matters into his own hands. Although his first attempts were simple buzz cuts, his determination only grew. One memorable moment was at age 14 when a soccer teammate's mother joked that his haircut looked like a 'bowl cut.' This incident, though hurtful, motivated him further. With the unwavering support of his parents, Alex continued to refine his skills over the years.

Now, at 28 years old, 15+ years later, Alex is a Self Haircut Expert. 

 

As of June 2024, between Alex himself, his two brothers, and father, Alex has been able to save his entire family well over $30,000+ in the past 15+ years from haircuts alone.
